On last Tuesday evening, I attended a gig of Stratovarius supported by Tracedawn and Dream Evil.

Stratovarius is a Finnish power metal band founded back in 1984; they are touring through Europe to promote their 12th studio album “Polaris”. Many metal heads found their way to the “Garage” (Saarbrücken) despite the bad weather conditions.

Tracedawn

The concert was opened by Tracedawn, a Finnish newcomer band which presented their new album called “Ego Anthem”. Their style is best described as heavy/power metal with some brutal death metal growls. I truly enjoyed their performance because of the frequent style changes; they have a lot of potential to become the new promise of the power metal scene.

Dream Evil

The second supporting band was the Swedish band “Dream Evil” founded by the producer Fredrik Nordström. Their songs are influenced by medieval and fantastical themes with the typical power metal sound; very melodic, dual guitars and clear vocals. Dream Evil played a few songs from their new album “In the Night”, which was released only a few days before the gig and some of their classics like “The book of Heavy Metal”.

Stratovarius

Finally, with the opening melody from “Destiny”, Stratovarius along with their vocalist Timo Kotipelto came on stage. The sing-along song “Hunting High and Low” and the powerful “Speed of Light “ followed in a row before Timo addressed a few words to welcome the public. They played several songs from the new “Polaris” materials along with some well-known classics like “Million Light Years Away”, “Eagleheart” and the final song “Black Diamond”.

Overall it was a wonderful power metal evening at the “Garage” and personally, I can’t wait to see Stratovarius again, this summer at Wacken.
