Ramallah (xn) - Two Palestinians were wounded during clashes between Israeli soldiers and Jewish settlers near the West Bank city of Nablus on Saturday, witnesses and medical sources said.

According to witnesses, the clashes erupted after a number of Jewish settlers attacked the residents' homes in a village south of Nablus. Medics at Nablus National Hospital told reporters that two residents were injured by Israeli troops' gunfire, adding that they are in stable conditions.

Mayor of the village Abdul Rahim Abu Qadoos said in a press statement that about 20 Jewish settlers from the nearby settlement of Brakha attacked the villagers' homes "without any reason." He went on saying that the residents clashed with the settlers, and threw stones at them, "then an Israeli army force arrives at the scene and opened fire at the residents, wounding two people."

The settlement issue is one of the most sticky and complicated issues that keeps the peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians stalled. The Palestinians say talks can only resume if settlement activities stop. The Palestinians in the West Bank say that Jewish settlers keep attacking devastated villages in the region, where clashes usually erupt between the two sides, where the Israeli army intervenes.
